April Is Women’s Eye Health: Steps to Protect and Stay Healthy

Studies suggest that women have a higher risk of developing eye problems than men. Even so, many women like you don’t practice preventive measures against eye injury and loss of vision. It’s April, and as a woman, it’s the month for you to reassess your eye health. Do you want to know more about how you can protect your eyes and keep them healthy? Let’s talk about the necessary steps in doing so.

Give Up Smoking

Smoking constricts your blood vessels, impeding the flow of oxygenated blood to your eyes. This detrimental habit also makes you more vulnerable to developing eye diseases and injuring your optic nerve.

Eat Healthy Foods

Healthy eyes and good vision start from within. What you eat will help improve your eyesight. You should eat foods rich in vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, lutein, and zinc. Some good choices are oily fish, leafy greens, pork, oysters, beans, nuts, eggs, and citrus fruits.

Use Protective Eyewear

If you know you’re going to use hazardous chemicals, wear protective goggles. Whenever you engage in high impact sports, be sure to wear sports goggles and face masks.

Always Wear Sunglasses

Be sure to get sunglasses that have UV protection. Excessive exposure to UVB and UVA rays makes you susceptible to macular degeneration and cataracts. Polarized lenses cut the glare while you’re driving. Wraparound glasses can help protect your eyes from the side as well. Wearing contact lenses with UV protection can help add more protection to your eyes while you wear your sunglasses.

Take Regular Breaks From Your Phone or Computer

When you stare at your phone screen or computer for an extended period, you tend to have headaches, dry eyes, back pain, eyestrain, neck pain, blurry vision, shoulder pain, and difficulty focusing on faraway objects. Wearing updated glasses suitable for computer use will help protect your eyes.

Make sure your eyes are at the same level as the top of your computer screen. This prevents you from looking up or down too much. Also, avoid glare from lights and windows or use an anti-glare screen. Blink more if your eyes are getting dry and make sure you look away from your computer every 20 minutes.

Have Regular Eye Checkups

See your eye doctor on a regular basis. If there are any eye diseases, your eye doctor will be able to spot it and treat it early.
